In short

Gudrā pele is a learning environment made for children, but the account belongs to the parent. We collect little data. We show no ads, build no advertising profiles, use no tracking tools and sell data to no one.

The controller is Linards Nikiforovs. Send questions about data to info@gudrapele.lv.

What data is processed

The parent's account holds the email address used to sign in, the time the account was created and the time of the last sign-in. There is no password: signing in happens with a one-time link we send to that address. If the parent sets a parents’ PIN, the account keeps a salted hash of it, never the digits themselves, so the PIN is the same on every device; a forgotten PIN can be changed only with a code we send to the account’s email address.

The child's profile holds only:

The child's profile has no surname, date of birth, photograph, voice recording or location. We do not ask for the child's name either: the profile only needs a name of some kind, and it may be a nickname. If a parent does type in a real name, that is their choice.

The desktop has a sticky note on which the child can write whatever they like. Its text stays on this device only: it is never sent to the server, never enters the account and never travels to another device. It can be viewed and deleted in the parent panel, and it is deleted together with the child's profile.

If you write to us, we process the information in your message to answer your question or solve the problem. In connection with a purchase, we may process information about the service bought and the status of the payment.

Signing in and security

We keep the sign-in link only as an irreversible hash. It is valid for fifteen minutes and only once. After signing in, a cookie is set in the browser that keeps you signed in; only the server can read it, it is valid for ninety days, and "Sign out" deletes it. This cookie is needed for the service to work at all, and it is not used for advertising or tracking.

We do not store your IP address. To stop a flood of malicious requests, we keep only an irreversible hash of the address together with a salt that changes every day; the next day these records can no longer be linked to anyone.

While the trial is closed, we also keep the list of email addresses we have invited. An invitation can be withdrawn at any time.

If you ask to be let in but have not yet been invited, your email address waits in a queue until we approve it, and we count how many times it has been asked. We delete this record once the invitation has been sent, and also if you ask us to.

If you leave your email address on the website to hear when Gudrā pele opens, we keep that address, the date you left it, the page's language and how many times it was left. We use it only for one letter about the opening and for nothing else. The address gives no invitation. We delete the list once the letter about the opening has been sent, and we delete your address sooner if you ask us to. The basis for this is your consent, which you give by leaving the address, and you can withdraw it at any time.

What is kept on your device

The child's work – learning results, drawings, the pet's little house, the farm in Peles ferma, the worlds of Kurmja ala with their moles, the progress of the game Pēc zvana and the courses of Jumtu pele – is kept in the browser's storage on your device. When a parent is signed in, a copy of this work is also kept in their account, so that the child can carry on with it on another device. The text of the sticky note stays on the device only. You can delete this data yourself: in the parent panel, or by deleting the site's data in the browser. We delete the copy in the account together with the child's profile.

Growth in the parent panel

In Lessons, each level of a task is recorded in more detail: how long was spent on it, how many presses were made, how many answers were wrong and what they were, including the words the child typed. It also records which books were read, which Vikipēle articles and news stories were opened, and when a drawing was saved (not the drawing itself). This record is kept only on your device and is deleted after 90 days.

From it comes a summary: how many levels were solved, how many answers were wrong, how many times the child paused for longer and on how many levels the computer showed the next step, how much time was spent in each subject and program, and how many books were read, articles opened and drawings saved, by day and by week (levels also by hour of the day), and for each task the last 12 days it was played on, how many levels were played on them and how many of those came out right first time. When a parent is signed in, the summary is also kept in the account for as long as the child's profile exists, so that it can be seen on another device.

In Quizzes, each quiz taken is recorded: which Vikipēle article it was about, in which language and how long the article had been open before the quiz began; and for each question, what kind of knowledge it checked, which part of the article held the answer, which answer the child chose and how long the child took. This record too is kept only on your device and is deleted after 90 days. With the child's progress, the account keeps which articles were opened and when, and for each article whose quiz was taken, the best stars earned, how many answers were right the first and the last time, on which days and how many times it was taken. The summary also holds how many questions were answered right in each category and for each kind of knowledge.

All of this is shown only in the parent panel, under “Growth”. We do not compare the child with other children, and we pass this data to no one. We delete it together with the child's profile.

Classes for schools

For a school we can set up a class – an account with no email address, in which each child has their own animal with a nickname and a four-digit code. We do not ask for or keep a child's name, surname, email address or anything else about the child. The record a class's computer makes of the lessons (the same as described under "Growth in the parent panel") is also kept in the class's account for 90 days, so that the class's teacher and we can see each child's progress. When a class is ended, we delete everything: the class's account, the children's animals and everything kept with them.

Usage totals

To see which programs, subjects and topics are used most, the service counts how many times and for how long they are used each day, for all families together. These counts hold no child, account, device or address: only the day, the program, subject or topic, the number of times and the time. They are sent only when a parent is signed in, and deleted on the device once sent. So that one account cannot distort the totals, the server keeps, for one day, how much time that account has already added, under a code that is different every day, and deletes it the next day.

The day's time across devices

If the parent panel sets how many minutes a day a child may spend in Gudrā pele, those minutes are shared by all of the family's devices. While a child uses a device, it tells the account every minute how many minutes it has counted today, and learns how many the others have counted. The server keeps the child profile's identifier, a random label for the device, the date, that day's minutes and any extra time a parent granted. These records are deleted after three days, and together with the child's profile.

Peles ferma and neighbours

In Peles ferma a child can go to visit someone else's farm and harvest the crops that have ripened there – and only then can others come to theirs. Before school, this gate is opened only with the parent's PIN; from Grade 1 the child decides for themselves, after reading a warning.

When the gate is open, a snapshot of the farm is kept on the server: the size of the field, the season, which crops are ready, the state of the guard and the fence, and a made-up name for the farm. No name, age, sex or picture is passed to anyone. Other children see only the made-up name and the animal.

Children cannot write to one another, choose whom to visit or find out who has visited them. While the gate is closed, nobody can visit the farm. Closing the gate, or not visiting for two days, deletes the snapshot.

What happens around the farm is also kept on the server. A single visit – who went to whom, when and what came of it – is kept for no longer than one day. News of what happened while the child was away is kept until the child reads it, and after that for no longer than one day; unread news disappears after thirty days. A market offer is kept while it is valid, and deleted afterwards. None of these records holds a name, an age or any text written by a child.

One thing remains even when the gate is closed: the largest field size we have seen the child have, and the time when it could have been reached. It is one number and one clock. It is there so that a child who closes the gate does not lose a fence they have already earned. It is deleted together with the child's profile.

Jumtu pele and courses for friends

In Jumtu pele a child can build a course and, once they have run it from start to finish, pass it to a friend. The server then keeps the course's map – only the tiles, with no word written by any child –, a made-up runner's name that is not the child's name, the time it was made and the child profile's identifier, so that the course can be removed in the parent panel and is deleted together with the child's profile. The course is given four animal signs, and it can be opened only by another child with a Gudrā pele account who enters those signs; there is no public access. The server records which child has opened a course, finished it, given it a star or reported it, so that each child can do each of these only once; other children see only the total, not which children they were. Reports of unsuitable courses are reviewed by the service's operator, and a course can be removed. The counters for searching signs are kept only as an irreversible hash with a salt that changes every day. A course is kept until the parent or we remove it, or until the child's profile is deleted.

The weather on the desktop

The desktop's scenery shows the real weather. To show it, we do not determine or collect where the child is. The device picks the town from its own time-zone setting: for a device on Latvian time it is Rīga. The device then asks our server what the weather is in that town, and our server requests the forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway). We pass the institute only the town's coordinates from our own list of towns, and no data about the device, the child or the account. The town is not saved in the account or on the server. Our server keeps each town's forecast for half an hour, and it is the same for everyone who asks about that town.

Visits to the website

On our public pages – the home page and the pages „Mācības“, „Vecākiem“ and „Mūsu stāsts“ – we count visits. Of each visit only the day, the page, the country and the city remain, as our web host Cloudflare determines them for the request. We use no cookies, store no IP addresses and cannot tell who visited a page. We do not count visits in the children's app.

This tells us whether anyone reads the pages and from where. We do it in our legitimate interest.

Why we do this

We process data to provide you with the service you ordered, to maintain the parent's account and to keep the child's progress. The legal basis for this processing is the performance of a contract.

We process payment and accounting information to meet obligations set by law. For the security of the service we process only the technical data that is needed. This is based on our legitimate interests.

We may count how often each game is opened. We attach no account, device, address, time or other identifier to these counts. They cannot be linked to a person, and they are not personal data.

Who helps provide the service

The website, the app and the account database are hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. The database was created in the European Union, and it holds the account's email address, the child profile's record, a copy of the child's work and, when the gate is open, the farm's snapshot. The child's largest pieces of work – the worlds of Kurmja ala and the drawings – and the growth summaries are kept in Cloudflare's file storage, which is also in the European Union.

Sign-in emails and the letter about the opening are delivered by Resend, Inc. We pass it only your email address and the content of the email. Resend is based in the United States, so this information is transferred outside the European Union; the transfer is based on the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission.

When purchases become available, payments will be processed by Paddle. We do not see or store payment card details.

These service providers process only the information needed for their task, and only on our instructions. We do not sell personal data. We do not pass it to advertising networks, analytics services, trackers or anyone else for advertising or profiling. The pages a child loads carry no third-party ads, pixels or trackers.

How long data is kept

We keep the account and child profile data while the account is active and it is needed to provide the service. After an account is deleted, we delete or anonymise the data, unless it must be kept longer because of legal requirements, payments, disputes or fraud prevention. Deleting a parent's account also deletes all of its children's records, progress, Kurmja ala worlds, drawings and farm snapshots. Deleting a child's profile also deletes all of that child's work in the account.

An unused sign-in link disappears after fifteen minutes. Salted security records disappear within a day. Visits, read news and expired market offers disappear within a day; unread news after thirty days. The day's minute records disappear after three days. The launch waitlist is deleted once the letter about the opening has been sent. We keep payment documents for as long as the applicable law requires. The anonymous counts of games opened are not linked to an account or a child.

Your rights

You have the right to ask for access to your data and to the data of the child profiles in your account. You can ask for inaccurate data to be corrected, for data to be deleted, for processing to be restricted, to object to certain processing and to receive your data in a portable format, where these rights apply.

To use your rights, write to info@gudrapele.lv. If you believe your data is being processed improperly, you have the right to complain to the Data State Inspectorate (Datu valsts inspekcija).
